We know that the TOEFL Writing section tests your ability to write in an academic style, which includes demonstrating proficiency in organizing ideas logically and synthesizing information effectively. It has two parts: Integrated Writing and Academic Discussion.

In the Academic Discussion, you'll hear a professor's lecture on a specific topic.  Then, you'll get to participate in the discussion by expressing your opinion and backing it up with reasons.  Your response will be scored on a scale of 0-5 based on how well you write and how effectively you integrate information from the lecture.

The most effective way to prepare for this task is by taking practice tests specifically designed for the Academic Discussion.  Let's start your TOEFL Academic Discussion practice test!

Writing Instructions

  • You will read a discussion related to an academic topic in class where your classmates have written their opinions on the said topic.
  • You have 10 minutes to prepare and write your personal opinion on the academic topic.
  • Try to answer the question based on the discussion. You can also take ideas from the opinions posted by your classmates.
  • There is no maximum word limit. However, an effective response should be a minimum of 100 words.
  • Your response will be judged on the quality and clarity of your writing with well-supported reasons.

Academic Discussion

Professor William: Universities should prioritize funding for scientific research over funding for arts and humanities programs due to the potential for scientific advancements to address pressing global challenges and drive innovation. However, proponents of arts and humanities argue that these disciplines are essential for fostering critical thinking, creativity, and cultural understanding. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?

Arnold (Student): I believe in prioritizing funding for scientific research as it holds the potential to address pressing global challenges and foster innovation. However, arts and humanities programs are equally essential for nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and cultural understanding. Therefore, a balanced allocation of resources is necessary to support both scientific research and arts/humanities initiatives, ensuring holistic development and societal advancement.

Mia (Student): While scientific research is crucial for tackling global issues and driving innovation, I think arts and humanities programs contribute significantly to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and cultural understanding. Hence, instead of prioritizing one over the other, universities should adopt a balanced approach towards funding, ensuring adequate support for both scientific research and arts/humanities programs to promote comprehensive education and societal progress.

Score 3 Response

In my opinion, universities should prioritize funding for scientific research over arts and humanities programs. Scientific research plays a crucial role in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, healthcare, and technological advancement. For example, funding scientific research can lead to the development of renewable energy sources, new medical treatments, and innovative technologies that improve quality of life. While arts and humanities are valuable for cultural enrichment, they may not have the same tangible impact on addressing contemporary challenges. Therefore, allocating more resources to scientific research is essential for driving progress and addressing societal needs. (96 words)

Score 5 Response

I firmly believe that universities should prioritize funding for scientific research over arts and humanities programs. Scientific research is paramount for addressing pressing global challenges and driving societal progress. For instance, increased investment in scientific endeavors can lead to breakthroughs in renewable energy technology, essential medical treatments, and innovative solutions to environmental issues. These advancements not only benefit humanity but also contribute to economic growth and global sustainability. While arts and humanities are undoubtedly valuable for cultural enrichment and personal development, the urgency of addressing contemporary issues necessitates a greater emphasis on scientific research funding. Therefore, universities should allocate resources strategically to maximize societal impact and ensure a prosperous future for generations to come. (114 words)
