The Technical University of Munich Visa Requirements for International Students

Students from abroad require a visa from the diplomatic representation of the Federal Republic of Germany in their home country to enter Germany. Such a visa must be applied for at least two months in advance because students need a letter of admission from TUM, which you will receive via e-mail in July (for the winter semester) or in December (for the summer semester). 

Here is the Overview of visa requirements/exemptions for entry into the Federal Republic of Germany: 

  1. If you hold a passport from a country that does not require a visa to enter Germany, you can generally stay in Germany for up to 90 days within any 180 days. During your stay, you cannot work for pay. Germany has agreements with certain countries that may allow longer stays under specific conditions. For more detailed information, visit the websites of German embassies and consulates in your country. 

  2. Residence permits (also for stays of more than 3 months) may be applied for after entering Germany without a visa. 

  3.  Footnote 3 also applies provided gainful employment is not taken up. 

  4. The visa waiver applies only to holders of biometric passports. 

  5. The visa waiver applies to holders of SAR passports (Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region passports). These may not remain on German territory for more than 90 days in any six months. Nor may they take up gainful employment whilst here. The visa waiver also applies to British Nationals (Overseas).

  6. The visa waiver applies only to holders of biometric passports (excluding holders of Serbian passports issued by the Serbian Coordination Directorate (in Serbian: Koordinaciona uprava) 

  7. The exemption from the visa requirement applies only to holders of passports issued by Taiwan which include an identity card number.
