Understanding Evaluation Criteria for TOEFL Reading iBT

The TOEFL Reading iBT is scored on a scale of 0 to 30. Each of the two reading passages is followed by a set of questions, and the final score for this section is determined by the number of correct answers.

However, knowing the score range is not enough for preparing for the TOEFL Reading iBT section. It is essential to have a clear understanding of the evaluation descriptors. Hence, let's check out these descriptors in the table below.

Level Score Range CEFR Level Description
Advanced 24–30 C1 Test takers can usually show that they can understand academic English passages that are at least as advanced as an introductory university level.
Test takers show the capacity to understand a range of academic and less common vocabulary, identify less common word meanings, grasp explicit connections in complex passages, recognize how information fits into a larger context, follow paragraph-length arguments with speculation, and combine information from passages with complex language and concepts.
High-Intermediate 18–23 B2 Test takers can typically understand the main ideas and important details in academic passages at an introductory university level. However, they may not fully or accurately grasp parts of passages that are dense with information or complex in their presentation of ideas.
Test takers can understand common academic vocabulary but may struggle with less common words, have difficulty comprehending less common meanings, and face challenges with explicit connections and inferences, especially in passages with low-frequency vocabulary or conceptual density. However, they can distinguish important ideas, often recognize the expository organisation and purpose of information, and can synthesise information, although they may find it challenging in conceptually dense, rhetorically complex, or abstract passages.
Low-Intermediate 04–16 B1 Test takers typically understand some main ideas and essential information in academic passages, but their overall understanding is limited. They can follow connections in simpler sentences, like a claim followed by a supporting example, but struggle with denser or more complex parts of a passage.
Test takers can grasp basic grammar but struggle with complex structures, understand common academic words but find less common ones challenging, locate information using familiar words, struggle with paraphrasing, and face difficulty with more challenging passages when identifying an author's purpose or recognizing major ideas.
