How do you obtain a visa as an international student at the University of Michigan?

Steps for Obtaining a Visa for the University of Michigan:

Step 1: Select a Visa (F-1 or J-1 visa)

  • All full-time, degree-seeking international students are eligible for an F-1 visa.

  • However, for some students, it might be difficult to enter the United States on a J-1 visa instead.

  • Some students are eligible for both an F-1 and J-1 visa and may be able to decide which visa is a better fit

Read all the requirements carefully before applying for the visa and choose wisely.

Other Dependents:

F-2 Dependents:

F-2 dependents cannot enroll as full-time students in college or university programs. However, they can study full-time in non-academic or leisure courses.

J-2 Dependents:

J-2 dependents can study in the U.S. without any restrictions. They can also apply for work permission from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Step 2: Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility

To comply with federal regulations, all international students need to have a “Certificate of Eligibility” to apply for a U.S. visa.

  • F-1 visa holders need an I-20 form to be eligible for their visa. The University of Michigan issues this form.

  • For J-1 visa holders, a Certificate of Eligibility is a DS-2019 form, which is issued by the University of Michigan or another sponsor.
