What to Expect and How to Prepare for the TOEFL Test
Preparing for the TOEFL test involves not only studying the material but also understanding what will happen on test day. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more confident and perform your best. Here’s a detailed guide to help you navigate the TOEFL iBT test day smoothly.
1. Before the Test Day
Make sure to check your TOEFL test details thoroughly.
- Confirm Your Registration: Log in to your ETS account to double-check the time and location of your test. If you are testing at home, ensure your computer and testing environment meet the required standards.
- Valid Identification: Ensure you have valid, acceptable identification. Your ID must match the name you used when you registered for the test. Generally, a passport is the best form of ID for international test-takers.
- Prepare Your Materials: If testing at home, prepare your note-taking materials, such as a whiteboard or paper that meets ETS requirements. Run another equipment check to ensure your computer, camera, and internet connection are functioning properly.
On the night before the test day, make sure to follow the instructions.
- Rest Well: Get a good night's sleep to ensure you are well-rested and alert during the test.
- Prepare Snacks and Water: While you cannot bring these into the testing room, having them ready for a break can help you stay energised.
2. On Test Day
The following instructions should be followed at the Test Center.
- Arrive Early: Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled test time. This allows time for check-in procedures and helps reduce pre-test anxiety.
- Security Check: Be prepared for a thorough security check, including ID verification, digital photographs, and possibly fingerprinting. You may also be asked to empty your pockets and store personal items in a designated area.
- Prohibited Items: Remember that mobile devices, watches, personal items, food, and drinks are not allowed in the testing room. Consult the TOEFL iBT Information Bulletin for a complete list of prohibited items.
If you’ve opted for a Testing at Home Edition, make sure to follow these guidelines.
- Environment Check: Make sure your testing area is quiet and free from interruptions. Close all programs and applications except the ETS Test Browser.
- Check-In Process: Follow the proctor’s instructions for check-in, including showing your ID and completing a room scan with your webcam.
- Note-Taking Materials: Have your approved note-taking materials ready and ensure they are visible to the proctor.

- Duration: The total test time is about 3 hours, with each section timed separately.
- Break: There is a 10-minute break after the Reading and Listening sections. Use this time to stretch, have a snack, and use the restroom.
- Test Environment: Maintain a quiet and focused environment. Follow the proctor’s instructions and avoid any behavior that could be construed as cheating.
- Technical Issues: If you encounter any technical issues while testing at home, inform the proctor immediately.
4. After the Test
After finishing all sections, take a moment to follow the instructions.
- Review and Submit: After finishing all sections, review your answers if time permits, and then submit your test.
- End of Test: Follow the proctor’s instructions for ending the test session and ensure all materials are properly handled.
- Score Availability: TOEFL iBT scores are available online approximately 6 days after the test date. You can access your scores through your ETS account.
