How will I be assessed in the TOEFL exam?

The TOEFL test measures four main sections such as Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each of the skills assesses a different aspect of a person's understanding and ability to use the English language within a context specific to academic settings.

  • In reading, you will be assessed on the understanding and the ability to find main ideas, find details, and even inferences made in the reading academic texts while answering the given questions.
  • Listening requires you to hear recordings of lectures, conversations, and discussions which are presented in this section, followed by multiple-choice questions. You will be assessed on your ability to recognise specific points while understanding the intention of the speaker in academic settings where English is spoken.
  • The Speaking section will provide a number of prompts along which you will be required to record your responses. The response will be evaluated for clarity, fluency, coherence, and pronunciation, demonstrating the extent to which an individual would be able to express their thoughts in spoken English.
  • Finally, in writing, you'll write essays based on the prompts given to you. This tests your ability to structure ideas while using the grammar convention and express your ideas clearly on writing. It is a measure to assess your ability to write within an academic environment.

All of these sections are scored separately where the final TOEFL score is a summation of all of them. Therefore, to score high on the TOEFL test, one has to have a balanced performance in all the sections.
