The university has announced a change in academic advising hours to better accommodate students' schedules.

Academic Advising Hours

The university is pleased to announce a change in academic advising hours to better accommodate students' schedules. Starting next semester, advising hours will be extended from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, instead of the current 10 AM to 3 PM. This change aims to provide more flexibility for students who have classes or work commitments during the day. Additionally, advisors will be available for virtual appointments, allowing students to seek guidance from the comfort of their homes or dormitories.

Directions: After the passage appears, a timer located at the top of your computer screen will commence counting down the time allocated for reading. Once the reading time concludes, the passage will disappear from the screen, replacing an image showing a student.

Audio Transcript

Speaker A: Did you hear about the new advising hours? I think it's a great idea!

Speaker B:
I'm not so sure. I mean, it's nice that they're extending the hours, but I worry it might not be enough.

Speaker A:
Why do you think that? With the new hours, students have more time to meet with advisors, especially those with busy schedules.

Speaker B:
True, but I think they should also consider having some evening hours. Many students work during the day and might still find it hard to meet during the extended hours.

Speaker A:
That's a fair point. But at least the virtual appointments offer more flexibility, right? Students can meet from anywhere.

Speaker B:
Yes, virtual appointments are a good addition. However, not everyone is comfortable with virtual meetings, and some might prefer face-to-face interactions.

Speaker A:
I suppose. But overall, I think it's a step in the right direction. It shows the university is trying to be more accommodating.

Speaker B:
I agree it's a positive change, but I hope they continue to improve and maybe add evening hours in the future.

Speaker A:
That would be ideal. Let's see how this change works out first.

Speaker B:
Yes, hopefully, it will benefit most students.

Directions: Once the lecture concludes, the picture of the two students will be replaced by a screen instructing you to prepare to answer the question. Subsequently, the following question will appear on the screen and will be read aloud by a narrator.

They suggest evening hours could be more helpful. Also, Speaker B mention virtual appointments are good, but not everyone like virtual meetings. They, uh, prefer face-to-face. Rater’s Comment:

The response earns a Score 1 due to significant language errors and limited content development. Language errors include subject-verb agreement issues, such as "Speaker B, um, think the new advising hours is, uh, not enough," and incorrect article usage, as in "students who work during day might still have problem." Pronoun reference is unclear in "They, uh, did not mention about how virtual appointments can be done from home." Delivery is hindered by frequent filler words like "um" and "uh," causing unnatural pauses and choppy speech. Content development is weak, with repeated ideas like "Speaker B mention virtual appointments are good, but not everyone like virtual meetings," and missing key points, such as the convenience of virtual appointments. To score higher, the response needs clearer language, fewer repetitions, and more coherent content.

Listen to the audio recording to hear a high-level answer to the provided question.

High-Level Answer Audio Transcript:

Speaker B expresses a cautious opinion about the new advising hours. While acknowledging the positive aspect of extended hours, Speaker B is concerned that it might not be sufficient for students who work during the day. He suggests that evening hours could be more beneficial for those with daytime commitments. Additionally, although he appreciates the introduction of virtual appointments, he points out that not all students are comfortable with virtual meetings and might prefer in-person interactions. Overall, Speaker B agrees that the change is a step in the right direction but hopes for further improvements, such as the inclusion of evening hours, to better accommodate all students' needs.

Rater’s Comment:

This response earns a Score 4 due to its comprehensive and coherent discourse, effectively fulfilling the task's demands. The speaker demonstrates advanced language use with complex sentence structures, such as "While acknowledging the positive aspect of extended hours, Speaker B is concerned that it might not be sufficient for students who work during the day." The vocabulary is sophisticated, with precise terms like "cautious opinion" and "step in the right direction." Delivery is fluid, with clear articulation and smooth transitions, as seen in the logical progression from acknowledging benefits to suggesting improvements. The content is well-organised, presenting a clear progression of ideas and supporting examples, such as the need for evening hours and the potential discomfort with virtual meetings. These elements showcase mastery in language use and topic development, with notable strengths in clarity and coherence.
