Good News For Movie Fans

The Northfield College Student Association recently decided to make a new purchase. Read the following announcement in the college newspaper about the decision.

The Student Association has just purchased a new sound system for the Old Lincoln Hall auditorium, the place where movies on campus are currently shown. By installing the new sound system, the Student Association hopes to attract more students to the movies and increase ticket sales. Before making the purchase of the new equipment, the Student Association conducted a survey on campus to see what kind of entertainment students liked best. Going to the movies ranked number one. “Students at Northfield College love going to the movies,” said the president of the Student Association, “so we decided to make what they already love even better. We’re confident that the investment into the sound system will translate into increased ticket sales.”

Directions: After the passage appears, a timer located at the top of your computer screen will commence counting down the time allocated for reading. Once the reading time concludes, the passage will disappear from the screen, replacing an image showing a theatre.

Audio Transcript

William : Hi Sharon! Have you heard about the new sound system?

Sharon : Oh yes, William! I found out yesterday.

William : Well, I really think the Student Association made a bad decision.

Sharon :  Really? Why? Don’t you like going to the movies?

William :  Sure I do. But this new purchase is just a waste of money.

Sharon : What do you mean? It’s supposed to sound really good.

William :  Yeah, well, I’m sure it does, but, in Old Lincoln Hall? I mean that building must be 200 years old! It used to be the college gym! The acoustics are terrible.

Sharon : So you’re saying there’ll be no improvement?

William : That’s right. And also, I seriously doubt that going to the movies is the number one social activity for most students.

Sharon : Yeah, but that’s what students said.

William : Well, of course that’s what they said. What else is there to do on campus?

Sharon : What do you mean?

William : I mean, there isn’t much to do on campus besides go to the movies. If there were other forms of, uh recreation, or other social activities, you know, I don’t think most students would have said that going to the movies was their first choice.

Directions: Once the lecture concludes, the picture of the professor will be replaced by a screen instructing you to prepare for answering the question. Subsequently, the following question will appear on the screen and will be read aloud by a narrator.

During the conversation, um, it is clear that, William believes that the Student Association made a mistake in purchasing a new sound system. Also, um, he doubts that going to the movies is the top social activity for students. Listen to the audio recording to hear a high-level answer to the provided question.

High-Level Answer Audio Transcript:

In the conversation, William shares his disapproval of the Student Association’s decision of purchasing a new sound system. He contends that the amount spent was unnecessary which offers enough justifications for his viewpoint. Additionally, he believes that there are two major reasons for this ineffective decision, such as, the new sound system will be installed in Old Lincoln Hall, which is an old building with poor acoustics. The second one was the popularity of movies as a social activity among students, suggesting that there are limited recreational options on campus. In my opinion, William raises a valid point about the limitations because the sound system could still enhance the quality of the experience for those who do enjoy going to the movies. (122 words)

Rater’s Comment:

This response clearly suggests William's opinion and reasons. The answer has a high level of comprehension, summarizing the key points from the conversation and provides a thoughtful personal opinion with a reasoned explanation. Overall, the response is accurate, well-developed, and shows a balanced perspective on the decision as well as their personal opinion.
