The university library has announced a change in its database access policy.

Library Database Access

The university library is implementing a new policy to enhance database access for students. Starting next semester, students will be required to log in using their university credentials to access online databases. This change aims to improve security and ensure that only current students can use these resources. Additionally, the library will offer workshops to help students navigate the new system and make the most of the available resources. The library believes this will streamline access and provide better support for students' research needs.

Directions: After the passage appears, a timer located at the top of your computer screen will commence counting down the time allocated for reading. Once the reading time concludes, the passage will disappear from the screen, replacing an image showing a student.

Audio Transcript

Speaker A: Did you hear about the new library database access policy?

Speaker B:
Yes, I did. I think it's a great idea. It will definitely improve security by ensuring only current students can access the databases.

Speaker A:
I see your point, but I think it might be a hassle for students. Having to log in every time could be annoying, especially if you're in a hurry.

Speaker B:
True, but the workshops they’re offering could really help students get used to the new system. Plus, it’s a good opportunity to learn more about the resources available.

Speaker A:
I suppose the workshops could be beneficial, but I still think the login process might slow things down. What if someone forgets their credentials?

Speaker B:
Well, they could always reset their password. And honestly, most students are already used to logging in for other services, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Speaker A:
I guess you’re right. It’s just that sometimes these changes feel like more of a burden than a benefit.

Speaker B:
I understand, but in the long run, it could really help protect our resources and ensure that students are getting the support they need for their research.

Speaker A:
Yeah, I can see how it might be useful in the long term. I just hope it doesn’t cause too many issues initially.

Speaker B:
I think with time, everyone will adjust. It’s all about making the most of the resources we have.

Directions: Once the lecture concludes, the picture of the two students will be replaced by a screen instructing you to prepare to answer the question. Subsequently, the following question will appear on the screen and will be read aloud by a narrator.

Answer Key with Explanation for TOEFL Speaking Test - Library Database Access

We've provided two sample responses at different proficiency levels (mid-level and high-level). By comparing the differences, you'll gain valuable insights into the key elements that contribute to achieving a top score on the TOEFL exam.

Listen to the audio recording to hear a mid-level answer to the provided question.

Mid-Level Answer Audio Transcript:

The woman, um, she thinks the new library policy is good. She say it will improve security by making sure only students can access the databases. Uh, she also mention workshops, which, um, will help students learn the new system. But, she thinks logging in every time might be annoying. Uh, she say students are used to logging in for other things, so it shouldn't be too hard. She, um, thinks it will protect resources. But, she didn't mention about how it will support research needs. Overall, she thinks it is a good idea, but, um, it might be a hassle at first.

Rater’s Comment:

The response demonstrates significant language errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues: "She say it will improve security" and "she also mention workshops." Tense consistency is problematic, with a mix of present and past tenses. Filler words like "um" and "uh" are pervasive, disrupting fluency and causing unnatural pauses, e.g., "The woman, um, she thinks." Speech clarity is compromised by choppy delivery and frequent hesitations. Content development is weak, with repeated ideas like "she thinks the new library policy is good" and missing points about supporting research needs. Transitions are weak, and the response lacks depth. This response earned a score of 1 due to its limited content, coherence, and delivery issues. To improve, the speaker should focus on reducing filler words, ensuring grammatical accuracy, and developing a more structured response with clear transitions and comprehensive content.

Listen to the audio recording to hear a high-level answer to the provided question.

High-Level Answer Audio Transcript:

The woman expresses a positive opinion about the new library database access policy. She believes that requiring students to log in with their university credentials will enhance security by ensuring that only current students can access the databases. She also appreciates the library's initiative to offer workshops, which she thinks will help students become familiar with the new system and learn more about the available resources. Although she acknowledges that logging in might be inconvenient, she argues that most students are already accustomed to logging in for other services, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Overall, she feels that the policy will protect resources and provide better support for students' research needs in the long run.

Rater’s Comment:

The response earns a score of 4 due to its comprehensive fulfilment of the task's demands, with only minor lapses. Language strengths are evident in the use of advanced grammar structures, such as "Although she acknowledges that logging in might be inconvenient," and sophisticated vocabulary like "initiative" and "accustomed." The response demonstrates complex sentence constructions, for instance, "Overall, she feels that the policy will protect resources and provide better support for students' research needs in the long run." Delivery is marked by a natural flow and effective pacing, with clear articulation and smooth transitions, as seen in the seamless progression of ideas. Content development is strong, with a clear organisation and coherent arguments, supported by effective examples, such as the mention of workshops aiding students. These elements collectively demonstrate mastery, with notable strengths in language use and topic development to maintain.
