Female Speaker:
I’m not so sure. I mean, it sounds good in theory, but I worry it might get too noisy and distract other students.

Male Speaker:
Well, the library has designated these areas specifically for group work, so I think they’ll manage the noise levels. Plus, having projectors and whiteboards is a huge advantage for presentations.

Female Speaker:
True, but I’ve had bad experiences with booking systems before. They often get overbooked or don’t work properly.

Male Speaker:
That’s a fair point, but the online reservation system should make it easier to manage. It’s more convenient than having to sign up in person.

Female Speaker:
I suppose. I just hope they maintain the equipment well. It’s frustrating when things don’t work as they should.

Rater’s Comment:

The response earns a Score 1 due to significant language and delivery issues. Language errors include subject-verb agreement problems, such as "She think it might be too noisy," and tense inconsistency, as seen in "She also mention that maintenance." Filler words like "um," "uh," and "like" disrupt the flow, and there are unnatural pauses, particularly after "The female speaker, um," and "She also, like, worries." The speech is choppy, with clarity issues due to frequent hesitations. Content development is weak, with repetition of "She is not sure if it will be beneficial for everyone" and missing points about the advantages of projectors and whiteboards. The response lacks coherence and fails to fully address the task. To improve, the speaker should focus on reducing filler words, ensuring grammatical accuracy, and providing more detailed content.

Listen to the audio recording to hear a high-level answer to the provided question.

High-Level Answer Audio Transcript:

The female speaker expresses some reservations about the new group study areas in the library. She is concerned that these areas might become too noisy, potentially distracting other students who are trying to study. Additionally, she is sceptical about the effectiveness of the online booking system, as she has had negative experiences with such systems in the past, where they were often overbooked or malfunctioned. Furthermore, she worries about the maintenance of the equipment, fearing that if not properly maintained, it could lead to frustration among users. Despite acknowledging some potential benefits, her overall opinion is cautious, preferring to wait and see how the initiative is implemented and managed.

Rater’s Comment:

The response earns a score of 4 due to its comprehensive coverage of the female speaker's opinion, demonstrating a high level of language proficiency and content development. The speaker uses advanced grammar structures, such as "She is concerned that these areas might become too noisy," and sophisticated vocabulary like "reservations" and "sceptical." The sentence constructions are complex, yet clear, as seen in "Despite acknowledging some potential benefits, her overall opinion is cautious." The word usage is precise, effectively conveying the speaker's cautious stance. Delivery is smooth, with a natural flow and effective pacing, ensuring high intelligibility. The response is well-organised, with a clear progression of ideas, supported by specific examples like concerns about noise and booking systems. These elements demonstrate mastery, with notable strengths in language use and topic development to maintain.
