New Auditorium

University to Build New Auditorium The university has decided to demolish the old campus auditorium and replace it with a new one. The auditorium is one of the oldest original buildings on campus, and administrators say it is showing signs of its age: sagging floors, peeling paint, a drafty interior, and outdated decor. The new auditorium, by contrast, will have a clean, modern appearance. Also, the old auditorium is too small to accommodate the number of current students. The new auditorium will be bigger, with a greater number of seats to accommodate a larger student body.

Directions: After the passage appears, a timer located at the top of your computer screen will commence counting down the time allocated for reading. Once the reading time concludes, the passage will disappear from the screen, replacing an image showing a professor.

Audio Transcript

Sam : Hey Alaya! Did you read about the proposal of a new auditorium in our campus?

Alaya : I think I have read it in the campus newspaper today. I think it is quite interesting.

Sam : Well, I wish they wouldn’t do this.

Alaya : Really? But the place is so old…

Sam : Yeah, but I like that. I think it’s a nice, historic-looking building.

Alaya : Hmm … well, I guess it’s kinda pretty …

Sam : It’s an important part of the university’s history. It was one of the first things built on campus… we should preserve that… not get rid of it.

Alaya : That’s a good point. But what about the need for an expansion?

Sam : I don’t think it’s necessary.

Alaya : But it was built when the university was so much smaller.

Sam : That’s true, but think about it: have you ever seen the space completely full?

Alaya : Well … uh, no, I guess not.

Sam : Me either. There are never any events when the entire student body is there. In fact, there are usually just a small number of students in the audience for a play or a concert.

Alaya : That’s true.

Sam : So, why make it bigger, if it works as-is?

Alaya : I see what you mean

High-Level Answer Audio Transcript:

In the conversation, Sam expresses his strong opposition against the university's proposal of demolishing the current auditorium and constructing a new one. He contends that the current auditorium should be preserved rather than being replaced. From Sam’s viewpoint, he puts forward two reasons to argue. Firstly, he emphasizes the historical significance of the old auditorium. He points out how the building was one of the earliest constructions on campus and therefore, it must be preserved. Secondly, he questions the necessity to construct a new auditorium and it usually draws only a small audience. I believe that the practical need for a larger space does not outweigh the importance of preserving the building and maintaining the historical integrity of the campus is more important. (123 words)

Rater’s Comment:

This response is well-developed and thoroughly demonstrates Sam’s opinion and the reasons he gave to justify the same. The response mentions and explains the arguments, such as the original auditorium's historical significance and whether a larger facility is actually required. The answer has a well-rounded explanation with detailed reasoning, making it suitable for a high-level answer.
