Instructions

  • The narrator will introduce you to the question format, consisting of reading a short academic passage followed by a related lecture on a similar topic.
  • Subsequently, you will be asked to respond to a question, integrating information from both the passage and the lecture.
  • After hearing the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to deliver it.
  • Following the initial instructions, the narrator will prompt you to read the passage on Recycling within 45 seconds.
  • The reading passage will be displayed on the screen for your convenience.

Recycling

Why isn't recycling a mandate on campus? How can a prestigious institution like U of C be so indifferent about recycling? Recently, volunteers from the U of C Environmental Watch group searched the entire campus and found only 10 recycling bins. In sharp contrast, they counted 30 vending machines, most of which distribute plastic, cans, and glass bottles. Shockingly, only one paper recycling bin was located. This implies that almost all the paper discarded on campus, including in U of C residences, is thrown in regular trash. When asked why there were no paper recycling bins, U of C president James Wicker explained that the university's recycling contractor does not recycle paper. When asked why a different company was not considered, Wicker cited financial limitations as the issue.

Narrator: Now listen to two students discussing an article on recycling.

Mark: Hey Lisa, you and your roommate have a recycling bin in your dorm room, right? I’m pretty sure I tossed a water bottle in a bin at your place before.

Lisa: Yeah, we do. Why do you ask, Mark? Are you looking to get one for yourself? I think they have them available at the housing office.

Mark: No, that's not it. My roommate and I have one too, and we put it out with our garbage every week. It’s just that I read an article in the campus paper today suggesting that none of the dorms on campus are recycling.

Lisa: Oh, I read that article too. I agree, the writer obviously didn't check their facts. But they did have a point about the lack of bins for recycling paper. I mean, what kind of institution goes through more paper than a university?

Mark: True. And, as always, the budget gets the blame.

Lisa: What I don’t get is how they can charge us student dues for things like live entertainment, which many people don’t even use, but they can’t charge us for something as important as a recycling program.

Mark: Maybe you should write a letter to the editor about that. I, for one, wouldn’t mind paying a few extra dollars each year to do my part for the environment and save a few trees.

Lisa: Maybe, but I’m not sure how many other students would share your enthusiasm.
