Transcript of the Audio of ‘Retirement Party’

Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and a professor.

Male Student: Hello, Professor Mason. Can I have a moment?

Female Professor: Certainly, Eric. I believe there was something I needed to discuss with you as well.

Male Student: It might be about my delayed essay.

Female Professor: Ah, that could be it. I was worried I had misplaced it…

Male Student: I apologize. Actually, it was my computer that misplaced it, the initial draft, and... Anyway, I finally placed it in your mailbox yesterday.

Female Professor: Oh, and I haven’t checked the mailbox today. Well, I'm relieved it's there... I'll review it over the weekend.

Male Student: I'm sorry again. By the way, I can also email it to you if you prefer.

Female Professor: Excellent, I'm curious to see the final version.

Male Student: I just heard some graduate students talking about a party for Dean Adams. Is it a retirement party?

Female Professor: Yes, it is. All students are welcome. Wasn't there a notice on the anthropology department's bulletin board?

Male Student: Uh, I'm not sure. Anyway, I wanted to offer my help for the party. I took a few anthropology classes with Dean Adams, and they were excellent. I find her inspiring, and I thought I could contribute.

Female Professor: That's thoughtful of you, Eric. However, it's going to be quite simple. Nothing extravagant, as that's not her preference.

Male Student: So, there won't be much?

Female Professor: We'll have coffee, cookies, and maybe a cake. But the administrative assistants are handling that part. You could check with them, though I believe they have everything under control.

Male Student: Uh, Ok.

Female Professor: You know what, forget it…

Male Student: What’s up?

Female Professor: It’s not related to the party, and I’m sure there are more interesting ways for you to spend your time, but we could use some assistance with a project. We're putting together a database of articles authored by the anthropology faculty. It may not be glamorous, but we need someone familiar with anthropology to input these articles... I'm hesitant to ask, but I suppose this isn't something you'd be interested in…

Male Student: Actually, that sounds pretty interesting. I'd like to learn more about their research.

Female Professor: Great... and there are also some unpublished studies. Did you know Dean Adams conducted extensive fieldwork in Indonesia? Most of it hasn’t been published yet.

Male Student: Really? Like what?

Female Professor: She possesses remarkable versatility. Recently, she dedicated several months to researching social interactions in Indonesia and has made significant contributions to ethnology. Additionally, her work in South America has delved into biological aspects, particularly focusing on speciation processes.

Male Student: Uh, I don't want to appear unaware, but...

Female Professor: Let me explain how species form. It's about the development of two distinct species from one, often occurring when populations of the same species become isolated and evolve separately, resulting in two distinct species.

Male Student: That's intriguing.

Female Professor: Indeed. During her time in South America, she gathered extensive linguistic data and studied songs, which was incredibly captivating.

Male Student: It's, um, disappointing to think she's leaving.

Female Professor: No need to worry. She will still be active around here. She's engaged in numerous ongoing projects.

Answers and Explanations of ‘Retirement Party’

1. Answer: D
Explanation: The correct answer is Option D. To offer assistance in organizing an event. In the conversation, the student visits the professor to offer help with organizing an event, specifically mentioning a party for Dean Adams. This is evident from Eric's statements such as "I just heard some graduate students talking about a party for Dean Adams" and "I wanted to offer my help for the party." He expresses his interest in contributing to the event, showing that his purpose for visiting the professor is to discuss event organization and offer assistance, making option D the correct choice.

2. Answer: C
Explanation: The correct answer is Option C, “Learning from conversations among fellow students”. In the conversation, the student Eric mentions, "I just heard some graduate students talking about a party for Dean Adams." This indicates that Eric learned about Dean Adams' retirement from conversations among fellow students. There is no mention of receiving an email notification, noticing an announcement on a notice board, or being informed directly by Dean Adams during a class session. Therefore, option C is the correct choice.

3. Answer: A, C
Explanation: The correct answers are Option A and Option C.

Option A: “Two individuals are already handling it”. The professor mentions that "the administrative assistants are handling that part," indicating that the party organization is already being taken care of by designated individuals.

Option C: “The party doesn't need extensive preparation”. The professor also mentions that the party will be simple, with coffee, cookies, and maybe a cake, and that it's not going to be extravagant as it's not Dean Adams' preference. This suggests that the party doesn't require additional assistance beyond what is already being done.

4. Answer: D

Explanation: The correct answer is Option D, “To illustrate the diversity of Dean Adams' research endeavors”. The professor mentions speciation during the conversation to highlight the breadth and diversity of Dean Adams' research interests and accomplishments. She discusses Dean Adams' work in Indonesia and South America, emphasizing her contributions to ethnology and biological aspects, including speciation processes. By mentioning speciation and how populations of the same species can evolve separately to form distinct species, the professor illustrates Dean Adams' engagement in varied research areas, showing her versatility and wide-ranging scholarly pursuits. Therefore, (option D) is the most appropriate answer as it captures the purpose of the professor's mention of speciation in the context of Dean Adams' research.

5. Answer: B
Explanation: The correct answer is Option B, “Inquiring if he's open to working on it”. When the professor says, "I'm hesitant to ask, but I suppose this isn't something you'd be interested in…," she is expressing hesitation about suggesting the project to Eric. This hesitation suggests that she's not entirely sure if he would be interested in the task. By saying, "I suppose this isn't something you'd be interested in," she is indirectly asking if he is open to working on the project without directly assigning it to him. This indicates that she is testing his interest and willingness to take on the task rather than questioning his suitability (option A), seeking a recommendation (option C), or expressing regret for being unable to assign it (option D).
