Professor Karl: Today, our topic of discussion revolves around the influence of social media on society. While platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have facilitated global connectivity, enabling people to interact across borders, there exists a parallel discourse concerning the adverse impacts of social media. Issues such as the proliferation of misinformation, the emergence of cyberbullying, and the engendering of social media addiction have raised concerns. Given these considerations, what are your thoughts? Do you believe that the harms outweigh the benefits when it comes to social media?
Sam: I believe that social media has predominantly brought about positive changes in society. It has empowered marginalized voices, providing a platform for individuals who were previously overlooked. Additionally, social media has served as a catalyst for political activism, contributing to meaningful societal advancements. Furthermore, it has simplified the process of staying connected with distant family and friends. In the past, reaching out to loved ones required costly phone calls, whereas now, through social networks, communication and photo-sharing can be done freely and effortlessly.
Abigail: In my opinion, the negative impacts of social media outweigh the positive ones. Despite their ability to foster unparalleled connectivity, social media platforms have inflicted significant harm on both individuals and communities. Excessive usage of these platforms has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Moreover, the anonymity afforded by social media often facilitates cyberbullying and harassment, exacerbating the negative repercussions experienced by users.

In my opinion, the advent of social media has undeniably revolutionized communication, fostering unprecedented global connectivity and facilitating interactions across geographical boundaries. However, this technological advancement has also given rise to a myriad of challenges and concerns. The proliferation of misinformation on social media has led to societal polarization and undermined the credibility of traditional sources of information. Moreover, the prevalence of cyberbullying poses significant risks to mental health, particularly among vulnerable populations such as adolescents.
