Due to the growing use of cell phones, the internet for mass communication has divided among people with different opinions. A common belief is that people are no longer as adept at forming close relationships with friends and family. It is hard to dispute how social media is continuously altering and how individuals communicate with one another. People all over the world are now able to develop relationships in a way that was previously not conceivable thanks to the development of new technologies that enable non-simultaneous and distant engagement. Even though some may argue that this is a threat, such new development creates various opportunities for meaningful and productive relationships.

People often feel estranged in their surroundings. There are so many hobbies and interests that people enjoy, that it can be difficult to find someone who shares the same passions. Social media is of huge benefit to these people as they are empowered with opportunity for connection to a widespread community and countless resources. Some may have always wanted to learn more about a topic without having an avenue to jump in. Social media has proved itself to be effective in educating people of all ages on a variety of subjects ranging from rollerblading to string theory. 

Moreover, the internet is especially helpful for helping people find a voice. Whereas the first amendment protects our right to free speech, many people feel that they have lost their ability to be heard. Social media allows us all to find a new way to speak confidently and ensures that every person has the opportunity to be heard.

Professor: There are definitely too many risks associated with social networking. Phishing scams target a large number of consumers, stealing not only their money but also their identity. These concerns apply not only to adults but also to youngsters who are the targets of manipulation and bullying. When children become overly dependent on social media for communication, it can quickly lead to different types of weaknesses in the long run.

Because of the constant screen time, people nowadays are already lacking social skills, which has a noticeable effect on American family structures. Sociologists from Duke University and the University of Arizona have added more nuggets of information to this meal with a recent study that shows Americans had less people with them in 2004 than they had in 1985 when it came to talking about issues that are important to them. In 2004, the average American had only two close relationships, compared to three close relationships on average at that time.

In 2004, the percentage of Americans without someone with whom to discuss significant issues nearly doubled to over 25%. The majority of confidants are becoming relatives. Approximately 9% of persons in the same year completely relied on their spouse, and 80% of people discussed critical issues primarily with family. The same tendency that is causing fewer individuals to know their neighbors, be involved in social clubs or public events than in the past is also responsible for the decline in confidants.

We know a lot of people but we don’t know them very well. We are only heading in the wrong path if we are left to our own devices and cultural trends.
