How to do Abbreviations?

Abbreviations make communication effective, quick, avoid, and clear. Here are the abbreviation techniques and ways to do abbreviations.  

Abbreviation Techniques

Here are some abbreviations techniques: 

1. Include a period: Periods are used in some abbreviations, specifically those that are derived from Latin. For example: "i.e." (meaning "that is")

2. Typically capitalized: There are certain abbreviations and titles that are typically capitalized. For example: "Dr." (for "Doctor")

3. Create plurals: To use plurals in abbreviations, simply add “s” without an apostrophe. For example "MPs" (for "Members of Parliament")

4. Acronyms in all uppercase: All the acronyms should be used in uppercase letters. For Example: "FBI" (Federal Bureau of Investigation)

5. Steer clear of apostrophes: Avoid apostrophes when forming plurals of abbreviations. For Example:  "DVDs" (not "DVDs")

How to do abbreviations?

The purpose of abbreviations: Abbreviations are mainly used for 3 reasons. Efficiency, Clarity, and convenience. With abbreviations, the conversations are smoother and more efficient(writing or speaking) and avoid repetition in long phrases. 

Types of Acronyms: Types of abbreviations are Acronyms, Initialisms,  Contractions, Clipped Words, Portmanteaus 

Avoid using acronyms where possible: Use abbreviations that are familiar to common readers and avoid using acronyms where possible. 

 Try to avoid using two-letter acronyms in place of nouns: It is preferable to be clever and clear with the usage of two-letter acronyms as they can lead to confusion due to their generic nature.   

Abbreviations for Speedy Note-Taking

Here are the common abbreviations for speedy note-taking along with meanings for a clear understanding:

Common Abbreviation 

Here are some commonly used abbreviations: 

c. approximately, roughly, about

e.g. for example

i.e. in other words

cf. compared to, by comparison with\

w/ with

w/o without

v. very

vv. extremely

C century (e.g. C19 for ‘nineteenth century’)

etc. and so on

K or k a thousand (e.g. 500K for ‘five hundred thousand’)

m a million (e.g. $6m for ‘six million dollars’)

vs. against

Other Abbreviations 

∵ for "because", ∴ for "therefore" or "consequently", ? for "question", "doubt", or "possibility", # for "no" or "number", $ for "dollars", "money", or "cost", ∆ for "change"
