The Simple Present Tense in English grammar is one of the most essential tenses of it. People tend to use this tense to talk about the things that happen regularly, habits, and even general truths.

What is the Simple Present Tense?

Uses of the Simple Present Tense

1. Routines and Habits

It is used to often describe actions that happen regularly on a daily, weekly, or yearly basis.

For example:

  • I wake up at 8 AM every day.

  • Reeta goes to the gym four times a week.

  • They travel to Switzerland every summer.

2. Universal Truths and Facts

We use the simple present tense to state facts that are universally true or generally accepted.

For example:

  • Water boils at 100°C.

  • The Earth orbits the Sun.

  • Cats are mammals.

The simple present tense can also be used in making references to properly planned events in the future, particularly if the event is the one that is not likely to change.
