Visa and Work Opportunities for International Students in Florida

Student Employment

Before Graduation

International students with F-1 and J-1 visas who are enrolled full-time can work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the regular semester. They can work 40 hours per week on campus during official breaks, like winter break and summer.

After Graduation 

After graduation, F-1 and J-1 students cannot work without special permission. F-1 students need a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD Card) to work anywhere. J-1 students must have work authorization marked on page 1 of their DS-2019 to be eligible to work anywhere. 

Visa Requirement for International Students

  • International students living outside the U.S. must get an F-1 visa from a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to enter the United States.

  • After the student receives their admission letter and I-20, they can schedule their visa appointment. 

  • U.S. embassies and consulates typically start issuing visas up to 120 days before the program's start date listed on the I-20.
