Professor: Nowadays, life expectancy is rising everywhere in the world. It's likely that some of you know someone who is over 100 years old. I want you to think about the following before our next class: What elements, in your opinion, have led to the rise in life expectancy? Is it a result of our shifting lifestyle preferences, enhanced government services, developments in medical technology, or something else entirely?
Lisa: I think that recent developments in medical technology enhanced the lives of many as people live much longer nowadays. We've reached the pinnacle of modern medicine and could treat many chronic diseases and have made significant improvements in treating illnesses like cancer and organ transplantation. People who may have previously been diagnosed with specific ailments are now able to live longer and lead more satisfying lives as a result.
John: While advances in medical technology have undoubtedly had an impact, I believe that government service improvements have been just as significant. With the availability of free vaccinations, hygienic systems, and clean drinking water, health issues have significantly decreased. None of these items were available to people in the past. Public health campaigns have also aided in educating the public about the dangers of smoking as well as about good habits like eating well and exercising.

Through examining the distinctions, you will acquire valuable insights into the components that lead to attaining an exceptional score in the Writing section.
Score 3 Response
Our longevity is affected and influence in different ways, but I'm quite sure that the primary cause of our longevity is better government services. Allthough it was common for any person to continue living without receiving a routine check up or a medical examination, local officials at the present strongly advise them to see a doctor once annually. While it is true that people are more likely to receive a life-threatening disease diagnosis these days, early detection increases the likelihood of a successful recovery. As long as there is adecquate funding for health care services like these, people will live longer. (101 words)
Rater’s Comment
This response presents a clear opinion that government services are the primary factor contributing to increased life expectancy, with a reasonable justification. However, elaboration is missing of how government services compare with medical technology and lifestyle changes. Additionally, it lacks specific examples or additional details that would strengthen the argument. This is a mid-level answer as there are mistakes in spellings and overall, the progression of the ideas is not coherent.
Score 5 Response
In my opinion, modern science is the reason for longer lifespans. Additionally, physicians can administer those medicines much more easily because to new technology. Doctors can often provide remote medical assistance to patients, even if they live far away. The average life expectancy was far lower back in the day then than it is today. Although it's true that efforts towards public awareness on the topic of exercise and including a healthy diet have benefited people's lives. However, people at present are less active due to sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diets as compared to how they were in the past. Nevertheless, they live longer lives in the present time in spite of that due to regular medical checkups. For instance, children nowadays still experience fewer ailments than in the past even though they are less likely to play outside or attend physical education programs. (144 words)
Rater’s Comment
This response argues that the main causes of the rise in life expectancy are developments in contemporary science, especially in the field of medicine. It accurately highlights the advantages of improved treatment alternatives and remote medical aid. It has elaborated the points with relevant examples to justify the reasons presented. The sentences are varied and have tried using a few words which seems appropriate, with coherent information logically arranged.
