Professor: Today were going to discuss the impact of video games on brain development. Some argue that video games can enhance mental skills such as problem-solving. They also say games help with understanding space and doing multiple things at once. Others believe that too much gaming can lead to negative effects. These include reduced attention span and weakened social skills. Agree or disagree: Video games have a positive influence on brain development.

Lily: I agree that video games can have a positive influence on brain development. Many games require players to solve complex problems, think strategically, and make quick decisions, which can enhance mental skills. Such as, puzzle games like "Portal" challenge players to think creatively and improve their problem-solving abilities. Action games can also improve coordination between hands and eyes and reaction times.

George: I disagree with the idea that video games have a positive influence on brain development. Although some games might offer mental benefits, too much gaming can lead to negative effects. These include reduced attention span and weakened social skills. Such as, spending too much time on games can result in less time spent on schoolwork and face-to-face interactions, which are very important for overall mental and social growth.

Sample Response for the Academic Discussion Writing Task on The Influence of Video Games on Cognitive Development

Below are the two responses for the Academic Discussion Writing question where one of them showcases a mid-level proficiency while the other exhibits a high level of skills. Through examining the distinctions, you will acquire valuable insights into the components that lead to attaining an exceptional score in the Writing section.

Score 3 Response

I think video games can be good for brain development, but only if played in moderation. Lily is right that games can help with problem-solving and hand-eye coordination. For example, puzzle games like "Portal" make you think creatively. But George also has a point. Too much gaming can lead to problems like reduced attention span and less social skills. If kids spend too much time on games, they might not do well in school or make friends. So, while video games can be helpful, it's important to not play them too much. Balance is key. (Word Count - 95)

Rater’s Comment

This response attempts to address the prompt by presenting a balanced view on the impact of video games on brain development. The writer agrees with both Lily and George, acknowledging the cognitive benefits of video games as well as the potential negative effects of excessive gaming. However, the response lacks depth and detailed examples to fully support the argument. While the mention of "Portal" as a puzzle game that enhances creative thinking is a good start, the response could benefit from more specific examples and elaboration. Additionally, there are a few grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the response. For instance, the sentence "Too much gaming can lead to problems like reduced attention span and less social skills" could be improved by using "fewer social skills" instead of "less social skills." The response also contains a sentence fragment: "For example, puzzle games like 'Portal' make you think creatively." Despite these issues, the response is generally comprehensible and makes a valid contribution to the discussion. Overall, it demonstrates a basic understanding of the topic but lacks the depth and coherence needed for a higher score.

Score 5 Response

While there are valid points on both sides, I believe that video games can have a positive influence on brain development when played in moderation. Lily makes a compelling argument about the cognitive benefits of video games, such as improved problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination. For instance, strategy games like "Civilization" require players to plan ahead and adapt to changing scenarios, which can enhance strategic thinking. However, George's concerns about the negative effects are also important. Excessive gaming can indeed lead to reduced attention span and weakened social skills. Therefore, the key is balance. When video games are played in moderation, they can offer significant cognitive benefits without the adverse effects mentioned by George. Parents and educators should guide children to ensure that gaming is just one part of a well-rounded set of activities that include physical exercise, social interactions, and academic pursuits. (Word count - 143 words)

Rater’s Comment

This response effectively addresses the prompt by presenting a balanced view on the impact of video games on brain development. The writer acknowledges both the positive and negative aspects discussed by Lily and George, thereby contributing a nuanced perspective to the discussion. The response is well-organized, beginning with a clear stance and then elaborating on the cognitive benefits of video games, such as improved problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination. Specific examples like "Civilization" are used to support the argument, adding depth to the discussion. The writer also addresses the potential negative effects of excessive gaming, aligning with George's concerns, and emphasizes the importance of moderation. This balanced approach demonstrates critical thinking and a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The language is clear and formal, appropriate for an academic setting, and the response is free from major grammatical errors. Overall, the response is coherent, well-supported, and effectively contributes to the ongoing discussion, making it deserving of a high score.
